Anyone have any relatives or friends currently in the military? Its become an interest of mine since my boyfriend just joined the US Marine Corps and will be going to basic training soon.

I have two cousins in the military. One was in South Korea up until a little while ago and I have another cousin in Iraq. They're not first cousins and I've only met one of them.

RJ, what branch are they in? (army, navy, etc.) Well, this is embarassing...I don't know. I think I'd remember if I had been told they were marines, so I doubt that's the branch. I'd probably go with army?

Well my dad was a marine and I have uncles who were in the army and the airforce.
actually I am in the airforce and my sister just enlisted... it's a good time... i did some time in the "sandbox" this past year, but I didn't see combat so it wasn't bad

wow, that's really interesting. I don't live near a base, so we don't see many soldiers, sailors, etc. That's why i've been trying to scrape up info.
My only other connetion was that my grandpa was in the navy (i can't remember when) and did scuba diving, among other things. he always reminds me that because of his skills, he was also loaned to the army and air force.

Well if you have any questions or anything you can always email me or post it and I'll see if i can help
I don't know many marines, but my dad was one and I have another friend I could ask if it is a marine based question, but general military... i'm your girl
I'm sure basic will go fine (not fun but fine)... There's is twice as long as mine was, but in training time is all messed up and instructors seem to be able to make it slow down or speed up at their will (which ever you don't want at the moment).. really wierd thing... The best part is we always work as a team so you always know you have help (or you all fail together)

well, the part he is upset about about is they changed the date he leaves to just one week before my 18th birthday. we have several indian casinos where i live and he had wanted to take me (he turned 18 months ago). what i hate is that we can only write letters back and forth for 13 weeks. i have never written a letter before and dont think i can feasibly use it as a primary source of communication.

I hear that...
It is really hard to sit down and write a letter b/c it's so formal... but honestly the best thing you can do for him is send him one everyday. When i was gone the saddest I felt was when i didn't get a letter on a day... I could have gotten four the day before... the more letters you get the better.. they are great... i think i wrote 2 letters the whole time I was there, but I didn't have a boyfriend to write to and my parents and siblings were in ireland (yeah i know... they get ireland i got yelled at while I ran... but next year my little sis goes to basic and i'm going to new zealand so i got her back), really I just wanted to go to sleep and writing was work... plus sometimes we weren't allowed to write letters as a punishment for messing up...
It feels like going back in time... makes me so thankful for technology...
As far as the casino goes... you can both look forward to that while he's gone... plus it will probally save your money... although I do enjoy the free pop... (needless to say I don't gamble... i tried once and lost 10 dollars and that was it for me)
I think you'll feel a little better once things start going and you don't have the tension of worrying about what it will be like when he leaves...

Anytime... I remember what it was like to leave home for the first time (actually I remember all the questions my friends and family had that I didn't know the answers too)
My little sister is enlisting today... I think it is going to be much harder to watch her go away than to go myself!

now he's the one getting nervous, now that it is almost time to go i think he is realizing that he is really leaving home. luckily, the day after he leaves i have to drive up to my college for three days of "summer advising" and "orientation", so i will be busy and distracted for a little while.
